The seasons are remembered as six, each of two months, in order beginning with Magha: late winter, then spring, summer, the rains, autumn and early winter. With the three beginning from late winter, know the northern course. It is also the taking, for it takes away people's strength day by day. In it, by the nature of their path, the sun and the winds become exceedingly sharp, hot and dry, and wear away the cool, moon-natured qualities of the earth.

Vagbhata divides the year into six seasons of two months each, counted from Magha, the lunar month falling roughly mid-January to mid-February. Shishira is the cold tail of winter. Vasanta is spring. Grishma is the hot summer. Varsha is the monsoon. Sharad is the clear autumn after the rains. Hima, usually called hemanta, is early winter. This is India's year. A reader elsewhere can follow the weather where they live rather than these months. The first three seasons, late winter through summer, form the sun's northern course, uttarayana. Vagbhata also names it adana, 'the taking', and gives his reason. Along this path the sun and winds grow very sharp, hot and dry. Day by day they wear away the earth's saumya qualities, the cool, moist, moon-like side of things. What dries the earth draws strength from people as well. The text asks a person to know which half of the year they stand in, because during this half strength is being drawn down, a little each day.

Picture an unglazed clay water pot standing on a sunny verandah from January to June. No single afternoon empties it. Yet each day the hot, dry wind draws a little more water out through its walls, and by summer the level has sunk low. That slow daily loss is the taking: strength drawn down steadily over months, never lost all at once.

The sky part holds up. After the winter solstice, about a month before the text's count begins at Magha, the sun's path climbs northward for the northern hemisphere, days lengthen and sunlight grows stronger; across much of India the months toward June bring rising heat and very dry winds before the monsoon. A family doctor today would agree that sustained heat is draining. The body loses water and salt through sweat, appetite often drops, hot nights disturb sleep, and tiredness builds over weeks. Older people, small children and anyone already ill are more vulnerable in such heat. Dry winds do dry the skin and lips. What has no modern match is the earth's moon-natured quality being worn away; that is this system's way of naming coolness and moisture. South of the equator the hot and cool halves of the year fall the other way round.
