Here bitter, astringent and pungent tastes grow strong, one after another. So the taking half of the year is fiery. The seasons from the rains onward are the southern course and the giving half, for it gives out strength. Being gentle and cool in nature, the moon is strong in it, and the sun wanes. When cool clouds, rain and winds have calmed the heat of the earth, the unctuous tastes, sour, salty and sweet, grow strong. Strength is foremost in the cold, slight in the rains and the hot season, and middling in the other two.

Vagbhata splits the year in two. Adana, the taking half, covers late winter, spring and summer. In it the drying tastes, bitter, astringent and pungent, gain force in turn, so he calls it agneya, fiery. Visarga, the giving half, is dakshinayana, the sun's southward course. It holds the rains, autumn and early winter, and it is named for what it does: it gives strength back. Its nature is saumya, cool and moist like the moon, so the moon is strong and the sun weakens. Cool clouds, rain and wind settle the land's heat, and the moist, nourishing tastes, sour, salty and sweet, grow strong in turn. The body follows. Strength peaks in the two cold seasons, sinks in the rains and summer, and sits midway in spring and autumn. This is India's six-season year. A reader elsewhere can follow its spirit in their own weather: hot, dry stretches drain, and cool, moist ones restore.

Picture a village water tank through the year. Summer drains it to cracked mud. The first rains start to refill it, but the water is muddy and still low. By the cold months it is brimming and clear. The body's strength keeps the same calendar: it is lowest in the heat and the rains, partly restored in autumn and spring, and at its fullest in winter.

Today's understanding agrees with much of the pattern. Sustained heat lowers appetite and makes hard exercise feel harder. It also disturbs sleep, and many people feel worn down by the end of a long summer. Hot, humid weather adds to that tiredness. Cold weather tends to sharpen appetite, because the body spends more energy keeping warm, and many people find vigorous work easier then. Seasonal shifts in light also affect sleep and mood. Some parts have no modern match. The moon's strength, and tastes growing stronger in the plants themselves, are ideas from this system with no equivalent in today's science. Winter is not easy for everyone either. Older people, the frail and anyone with heart or lung illness can be strained by both great cold and great heat, so the idea of winter as the strongest season needs that caution.
