Water Through Matted Hair
Shiva Tandava Stotram 1
Meaning · English
Water pours from his forest of hair, hallowing his neck, where a tall garland of snakes hangs. His drum thunders as he dances fiercely. May Shiva bring us good.
His hair is so thick and tangled that it is called a forest, and water streams down out of it. The water sanctifies what it runs over, so his neck becomes holy ground. Snakes hang from that neck like a long garland. The words copy the beat of his small hand drum while he dances wildly. The last line asks for one thing: that Shiva spread good over us. In the original, his name and the word for good are the same word, side by side.
Picture a dense tree after a heavy rain. The sky has cleared, but water keeps dripping out of the branches, and the ground right under it stays dark and wet in a ring. His hair is that tree. The water caught in it keeps falling, and the place it lands, his neck, is the place it makes holy.
