Meaning · English

His neck dark as a moonless night under new storm clouds; bearing the heavenly river, wrapped in elephant hide, moon-graced, carrying the world, may he spread good fortune.

The whole picture hangs from his neck. It is dark, as dark as the middle of a new-moon night when fresh rain clouds have packed the sky shut and not one star gets through. Around that darkness gather his marks: the heavenly river he holds, the crescent moon that makes him handsome, the elephant hide across his shoulders. He is called the one who bears the world's load. The request is simple: may he spread good fortune.

Picture a bullock in the field, the wooden yoke resting on its neck, pulling a loaded cart without fuss, step after step. The weight sits right where the neck is strongest. The hymn calls him the one who takes up the world's yoke, and it sets that load on the same dark neck it has just described.
