Meaning · English
My delight is in the Three-Eyed One, who fed the archer of five arrows to the fire crackling on his brow, and alone paints leaf-patterns on the breast of the mountain king's daughter.
His forehead is a terrible flat plate, and the fire on it does not just burn. The hymn's syllables crackle and roar like flames catching. Into that fire he poured the god of desire, the archer with five flower-arrows, the way a priest pours an offering into a sacred fire. Then the same Shiva is called the one true artist who draws delicate leaf designs on the breast of Parvati, his wife. Fierce and tender sit in one line. The singer ends plainly: my delight is in him.
Picture a blacksmith who stands all day at a roaring forge, hammering red iron, and in the evening sits down and braids his small daughter's hair with careful fingers. The same hands do both jobs. That is the Three-Eyed One: the fire that burns desire and the gentle hand decorating his wife belong to one person.
