A Spark Swallows Desire

Meaning · English
Sparks from his brow's blaze swallowed the five-arrowed love god. The gods' king bows to him; a moon-sliver crowns him. May that skull-bearer, river in his locks, bring us fortune.
His forehead is pictured as an open courtyard where a fire burns. Its sparks alone were enough to drink up Kama, the god of desire who shoots five flower arrows. The chief of the gods bows before him. A thin line of the moon, whose rays are nectar, lights the top of his head. Then the poet names him a radiance: the one who carries a skull, with a river running through his tangled hair. The request is simple. May that radiance be our good fortune.
A single spark jumps from a struck match onto a dry leaf, and the leaf is gone before you can reach for it. Nobody needed to build a bonfire. In the same way, desire with all five of its arrows did not meet a full blaze. A few stray sparks from his brow were enough.
