Meaning · English
May the moon-crested one, whose footstool is grayed by flower dust from the crowns of Indra and every god, whose locks are tied with the serpent king, bring lasting fortune.
The gods, led by thousand-eyed Indra, bow so low and so often that the flowers in their crowns shed a steady trickle of pollen onto the spot where Shiva rests his feet, turning it grey. His hair is piled high and knotted, and the knot is held by a great serpent worn like a garland. The moon sits on his head, called here the friend of a bird said to live on moonlight. The closing line is a wish: may he bring good fortune that lasts.
The stone step at the door of a busy old temple is worn into a shallow dip, polished by bare feet over many years. No single visitor did that. Shiva's footstool is grey the same way: not from one god's bow but from crowd after crowd of them, each leaving a little trace.
