Meaning · English

May my mind take wondrous delight in the lord of beings, whose snakes' hood-gems tint every horizon like saffron, who wears a rut-blind elephant's hide as a shawl.

The snakes coiled in his locks are tawny, and the jewels in their hoods give off light. That light spreads outward until it colors the horizon. The poet pictures each direction as a bride whose face has been smeared with saffron paste. Over his shoulders hangs the hide of an elephant demon blind with rut, worn as an upper cloth. He is called lord of beings, the one who carries every creature. The prayer itself is small: that the mind find a wondering delight in him.

Picture one string of small lights hung in a dark courtyard at a wedding. Soon every wall around it has a warm glow. The few gems on his snakes do the same to the sky. The light starts at his head and ends on the faces of every horizon, like color brushed on a bride.
