Meaning · English

A bee drunk on nectar from Parvati's flowering arts; ender of Desire, the three cities, rebirth, the sacrifice, the elephant, Andhaka, and Death itself. Him I worship.

There are two halves, side by side. First, Shiva is a bee held by the sweetness pouring from the full, undiminished arts of Parvati, the all-auspicious one. Her arts are a cluster of blossoms, and he hovers there. Then the tone turns. He is the ender of Desire, of the three demon cities, of the round of births, of a sacrifice, of an elephant demon, of Andhaka, and last of Death itself. The singer worships that one, the same figure in both halves.

Picture a blacksmith's hands. All day they bring a hammer down on red iron until it gives. In the evening the same hands lift a sleeping child without waking her. Nothing about the hands has changed. The singer sees Shiva that way: the one tender with Parvati's sweetness is the one who brings Desire and Death to their end.
