Meaning · English
Victory to Shiva, whose forehead fire flares fiercely with each breath of the wildly whirling serpents, whose fierce dance is set going by the drum's loud, auspicious, rolling beat.
It opens with a wish of victory for Shiva, then shows him mid-dance. Snakes coil around him, and the dance whirls them so hard their hissing breath bursts out in gusts. Each gust makes the fire on his forehead, his third eye, flare up. Then the sound: a two-headed drum thumps out a loud rolling beat, and that beat sets his fierce dance going. The drum is called auspicious. The dance is wild, but the hymn hears it as a blessing, not a rage.
Picture a blacksmith at the bellows. Every squeeze pushes a gust into the coals, and the fire jumps, settles, and jumps again with the next push. The snakes' breath does this to the fire in Shiva's forehead: each hiss is a pump of the bellows, so the flame pulses in time with the dance.
