Meaning · English

Stone or fine bed, snake or pearls, jewel or clod, friend or foe, grass or lotus eyes, commoner or king: when will I, seeing them alike, worship Sadashiva?

The singer lines up six pairs. In each, one thing is prized and one is passed over: a bare rock and a decorated bed, a snake and a string of pearls, a heavy jewel and a lump of earth, a friend and an enemy, a blade of grass and a beautiful woman's eyes, ordinary people and a great king. He asks when he will act the same toward both sides of every pair. It is a wish, not a claim. He has not arrived there yet, and he knows it.

A shop mirror shows whoever stands in front of it. A child in torn clothes, a man in a good suit: the mirror gives each the same clear surface, nothing brighter for one, nothing dimmer for the other. The singer wants his mind to meet stone and silk, friend and rival that way, taking each as it is.
