Meaning · English
When will I be happy, living in a hollow by the river of the gods, free of bad thoughts, palms joined above my head, eyes steadied, chanting 'Shiva'?
The singer asks a question: when will I be happy? The answer he pictures is small. A hollow in a thicket beside the river of the gods, the Ganga, the same water that falls through Shiva's matted hair. A mind that has let go of its bad thinking. Hands joined and raised over the head, always. Eyes that have stopped darting about, held on the one whose forehead bears the mark. And one word on the lips, Shiva. Happiness is a place, a posture and a name.
Think of a compass needle on a table. Jostled, it swings wildly, back and forth. Leave it alone and it slows, trembles, and comes to rest pointing one way. The restless eyes the singer wants freed are that swinging needle. The single name he keeps repeating is north, the one direction everything settles toward.
