Opening Within the Womb

Shiva Sutras 2.4

Meaning · English

In the womb, the mind opens, undistinguished. This knowing is a dream.

Four words carry the sutra. Garbha is the womb, an enclosed inner place where something grows but does not yet see out. Citta is the mind. Vikasa is its opening or blossoming. Vidya is knowing, and svapna is dream. Now the plain sense. Inside the womb, the mind does open. But the opening is avishishta, not set apart: it is not different from the narrow knowing it started with. So the sutra calls this knowing a dream. It has the look of waking and the make of sleep. Why does Shiva teach it here? The sutras before this one place the work in the mind itself, which is the way of Shakti, the shakta upaya. It is neither the instant way of Shambhava nor the effortful way of anava. On this way the mind must learn what its own opening is worth. Some opening is only more of the same enclosure. Bhaskara's Varttika reads the womb as the great forgetting of one's own nature. On his reading, the mind opens when powers gather, and it rests content with them. That contentment is a limited knowing, a dream built of ideas. He adds that when the yogi sets aside those powers and holds firm, he reaches the highest attainment. The commentators agree that the sutra warns against taking this dreamlike opening for waking.

At night a lit window shows a room full of furniture. It seems to look out on a garden, but the glass is only returning your own room, larger and brighter. The mind's opening inside the womb is like that. It widens, and it still sees only its own contents.

1. Tonight, before sleep, take five minutes and recall one moment today when you felt sure you saw a matter clearly. 2. Ask quietly whether you saw it, or whether you filled it in from habit or hope. Do not argue the answer. 3. Tomorrow, when you feel pleased at having understood something, stop for one breath. Notice that the pleasure and the understanding are two different things.
