Knowing Rising Unforced

Shiva Sutras 2.5

Meaning · English

When true knowing rises by its own nature, the state of Shiva moves freely in the open sky.

Take the words one at a time. Vidya is knowing, the real kind, not information. Samutthana is rising up. Svabhavika means natural, belonging to one's own nature, so nothing is forced or produced. Khecari comes from kha, open space, and cari, moving. It is the sky-mover. Shivavastha is the state of Shiva, Shiva being the name for consciousness itself. Put together, the sutra says that when knowing rises of itself, the mind moves in open space, and that open space is the state of Shiva. Nothing is built or reached. It shows up when the knowing is allowed to rise. This rests on 2.4, which speaks of knowing as still dreamlike while it stays in the womb, unformed. Here that knowing rises naturally. The sutra belongs to shakta, the way of knowing and subtle thought. It is not shambhava, which needs no effort at all, and not anava, which works through breath and body. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes khecari as the mind moving in the sky of consciousness, which is the state of Shiva. Bhaskara's Varttika reads khecari as a seal, a mudra, that gives the yogi full joy in his own nature and sets him apart from small powers.

A hawk that has stopped flapping and rides a warm column of air. The sky was already there, and the bird only gave up pushing. Knowing that rises by itself is the lift, and the open sky it moves in is the state of Shiva.

1. Today, notice one moment when you simply know something without working at it, such as a forgotten name arriving after you stop searching. 2. Stay with it for one minute. Notice the quiet space around that knowing before any thought comments on it. 3. In the evening, sit for five minutes and recall that moment once. Notice what you did not do to bring it.
