The Teacher as Way
Shiva Sutras 2.6
Meaning · English
The guru is the means.
Three words need unfolding. Guru is the teacher, and in its root sense the one who is heavy, weighty with what he carries. Upaya is a means, a way of approach, from the root meaning to come near. Shakta is the way of Shakti, the Goddess as Shiva's own power of will and knowing. The sutra has two words: guru, upaya. The teacher is the way itself, not a signpost beside it. Shiva teaches this because 2.4 and 2.5 spoke of knowing rising and a state reached, and a reader asks how. The sutra answers that nearness comes through the guru. It belongs to the shakta way, where the road is the inner word and the power behind it, not a forced effort. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the guru as Shakti herself, the grace of Shiva that gives the opening. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that the guru is the one who makes the strength of the mantras plain, and that mantra and gesture, sound and breath, are taught through him as they truly stand. So the teacher here is both a person who speaks and the grace that works through the speaking. The next sutra names what that teacher shows: the wheel of letters.
A lit lamp passed to an unlit one. The second wick does not make its own fire. It takes flame from the first, and then it burns as light itself. The teacher is the first lamp, and the student's knowing is the second wick catching.
1. Today, think of one person who taught you something that stayed with you, a parent, a neighbour, a teacher. 2. Sit for two minutes and recall how they taught: what they said, what they showed by doing. 3. Notice whether what they gave you was information or a change in how you see. 4. If you have a teacher now, spend a few quiet minutes simply listening to what they have already said.
