The Wheel of Letters

Shiva Sutras 2.7

Meaning · English

Complete knowing of the wheel of the mother-letters.

Three words carry the sutra. Matrika means little mother. These are the letters of the alphabet, each one a mother because words are born from them, and through words every thing the mind names. Cakra is a wheel, a ring that turns and comes back to its start. The letters are a circle with nothing outside it, not a list. Sambodha is bodha, awake knowing, with sam added, fully and thoroughly. It is not hearing about the letters but knowing them through and through. The plain sense is that full knowing of this wheel is itself the means. The sutra before it names the teacher as the means, and this one says what the teacher gives. Whatever the mind holds, it holds in words, and words are made of letters. To know the wheel is to see how the mind builds its world. This belongs to the shakta way, the middle path, where the means is the mind's own power of thought and speech. It is neither the sudden opening of shambhava nor the effort of body and breath in anava. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, takes the wheel to be the whole run of letters through which the world is spoken, and its knowing to be what frees the bound mind. Bhaskara lays the letters out at length, vowels and consonants matched to the stages of the world, and says the knowing comes from a teacher pleased with a student who keeps at mantra.

1. Sit where it is quiet, back easy, eyes soft or closed. 2. Let a thought form in words, the way it does by itself. 3. Watch it being made. Each word is a handful of letters, and the letters are what the thought is built from. 4. When the mind runs off into the story, see that the story is made of the same letters, and come back to the making. 5. Stop when the sit is done, and let the words go quiet.
