Meaning · English
Be kind to us, Mitra, Varuna, Aryaman, Indra, Brihaspati, wide-striding Vishnu. Honor to Brahman; to Vayu, Brahman made visible. I spoke right and true; it guarded me. Peace, peace, peace.
The teacher first asks a row of Vedic gods to be kind to the class: Mitra, Varuna, Aryaman, Indra, Brihaspati, and Vishnu of the wide stride. Then he bows to Brahman, the reality underneath everything, and to Vayu, the wind and breath. He calls Vayu the one form of Brahman a person can directly perceive. He says he has spoken what is right, in step with the order of things, and what is true, matching fact. That speech protected him, the speaker. Peace is said three times.
Blow across the top of an empty bottle and a clear note sounds. Stop blowing and it vanishes; angle your lips badly and it becomes a hiss. The note is only air, shaped. The teacher honors Vayu for that reason: every syllable he taught rode on breath, and shaping it rightly kept him safe.
