When in doubt, look to thoughtful, devoted, gentle people who love what is right; act as they act, even toward the accused. This is the teaching, the Veda's inner core.

The teacher has raised a hard case: what if a decision about an act, or a question of conduct, has no clear answer? He offers no rule. He points to people. The ones to watch can weigh a matter carefully, are committed to their practice, are not harsh, and care about doing right. However they act, act that way. The same holds for someone who has been accused: treat that person as they would. He gives this four names, calls it the Veda's core, and says this is how it is to be lived.

A first-time guest at a formal dinner faces a row of forks and has no idea which one comes first. She does not guess or ask the loudest person at the table. She quietly watches the host, who knows the meal and is kind about it. When no rule settles a question, a steady, fair person who knows the way shows how to act.
