Beginning the Teaching of Yoga

Yoga Sutras 1.1

Meaning · English

Now begins the teaching of yoga, instruction handed on from teacher to student and followed step by step.

Three words carry this sutra. Atha means "now." In Indian texts it marks a start and a readiness, a point where the subject is opened. Yoga comes from the root yuj. It can mean to join, and Vyasa's commentary, the Bhashya, reads the root as samadhi, a steadied and gathered mind. Anushasana is "instruction" with the sense of following after: anu, "along," and shasana, "teaching." The teaching is passed down. It is not invented on the spot. Plainly, then: now the teaching of yoga starts, and it comes as handed-down instruction. Every word is a statement of subject and method. Patanjali defines nothing yet. Why say it? A treatise has to say what it is about, and for whom. The sutra sets the reader as a student and the book as a discipline with a lineage. Nothing comes before it, so it rests on nothing earlier. It is the doorway. Vyasa takes atha as the marker that a new subject is begun, and takes yoga to be samadhi. The commentators differ somewhat on how the word yoga is to be derived, but they agree the sutra announces the subject and the manner of teaching.

A signboard at the start of a hill path. It names the trail, says where it leads, and shows the first marker. It does not walk anyone anywhere. It tells the walker this is the beginning and that others have gone this way. The sutra is that board: it names yoga and says the path is taught.

1. Pick one fixed time today, such as after breakfast or before bed, and a quiet spot. 2. Sit for five minutes. Say "now" to yourself once, as a deliberate start. 3. Watch whatever the mind does. Do not try to change it. 4. Afterward, write one line on what you noticed. Repeat at the same time tomorrow.
