Yoga Is Stilled Mind
Yoga Sutras 1.2
Meaning · English
Yoga is the holding still of the turnings of the mind-field: the mind's own movements brought to rest.
Three words carry the sutra. Citta is the mind-field, the whole inner ground where thoughts, memories, wants and impressions appear. Vritti is a turning: one movement of that ground. Each thought and each mood is one vritti. Nirodha is a holding still. It means restraining or settling, not tearing out. Taken whole, Patanjali says yoga is the holding still of the turnings of the mind-field. Every word has its work: yoga is the thing defined, citta is where it happens, vritti is what is held, and nirodha is the manner. The text names yoga by what the mind does, not by a posture or a belief. Patanjali says this because the first sutra promised instruction in union, and a student needs to know at once what is being taught. So he gives a definition before anything else. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads yoga here as samadhi, a steadied state of the mind itself. Later commentators differ on how complete the holding still must be, and what remains once the turnings rest.
A snow globe is shaken, and flakes swirl until the figure inside cannot be seen. Set on a shelf, it settles by itself, and the figure shows clearly. The flakes are the turnings of the mind-field. The settled glass is the mind held still.
1. Choose one ordinary pause today, such as waiting for the kettle or sitting on a bus. Give it three minutes. 2. Sit or stand quietly and watch the mind. Each thought that rises is one turning. Silently say "turning" and nothing more. 3. After each one, rest your attention on the breath at the nostrils. 4. Notice how long the gap lasts before the next turning comes. Do not judge it.
