The Seer at Rest

Yoga Sutras 1.3

Meaning · English

Then the seer abides in its own true nature.

Take the words one at a time. Tada is "then": at the moment the condition just named has been met. Drashtri is the seer, from the root drish, to see. It names the one who watches, not what is watched. Svarupa joins sva, own, with rupa, form: its own form, how it is by itself. Avasthana is standing or staying put, from a root meaning to stand. The whole sutra says: then the seer stands in its own form. Patanjali teaches that when the mind's turnings are held still, what is left is not a blank. The one who sees is left, as it is. Why say it? Sutra 1.2 defined yoga as a stilling. A student will ask what remains once the stilling is done. This answers that, and "then" points straight back to 1.2. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, reads it this way: in the stilled state the seer, which is pure awareness, rests in itself. At other times it seems to take on the shape of the mind's turnings. The later commentators follow him in the main.

A glass of muddy water is left on a table. While it is stirred, nothing in it can be seen. Left alone, the silt sinks and the water clears, and the pebble at the bottom shows. The pebble was there all along. The seer is like that pebble, and the settled silt is the mind held still.

1. Pick one quiet spot today and sit for three minutes, phone out of reach. 2. Let thoughts come and go. When one appears, simply note, "this is being seen." 3. Turn attention gently to whatever does the noticing, rather than to the thought. 4. When the time is up, recall whether any gap showed between thoughts. Do not chase it or judge it.
