The Duty to Turn Away
Bhagavad Gita 1.39
Meaning · English
Why should we not know enough to turn away from this sin, we who can clearly see the crime that comes from destroying a family? Janardana, tell us why.
Arjuna is making an argument, and this is its sharpest turn. Three words carry it. Papa means sin, a wrong that stains the one who does it. Dosha means a fault or crime, something actually broken. Prapashyadbhih comes from a root meaning to see, with a prefix that makes it see clearly, all the way through. Nivartitum means to turn back; the same root gives the idea of returning from a road. Put together, Arjuna says that the other side cannot see the crime, but we can see it fully. He holds that this seeing is itself a reason to turn back. In his view, knowledge brings responsibility. Someone who knows the harm cannot claim ignorance later. He asks the question of Krishna, whom he calls Janardana, one who looks after people. It is his view in this moment, not yet an answer. Shankara reads Arjuna's grief as confusion born of attachment to what he calls his own. Ramanuja reads it as a weakness of mind that gives Krishna the occasion to teach. Madhva's tradition holds that Arjuna, as Krishna's devotee, speaks to draw the teaching out of him.
A driver sees that the bridge ahead has washed out, while the cars behind keep rushing on, unaware. The driver who has seen it cannot say he did not know. Arjuna feels the same: because he sees the ruin clearly, he believes he is the one who must stop.
1. This evening, sit for five minutes and recall one thing you noticed recently that you would rather not have noticed, such as a small unfairness, a neglected promise or a risk you let pass. 2. Write it in one plain sentence. 3. Ask whether having seen it asks anything of you. Notice whether the answer is a clear step or only a wish to look away. 4. If there is a small step, do it this week.
A mechanic is under a customer's car at closing time when he sees a cracked brake line. The customer only asked for an oil change and is already at the counter paying. He could say nothing, and no one would ever know. The verse speaks to that moment as Arjuna sees it: once he has seen the fault, the others' ignorance no longer covers him. Step by step, it would slow him down. He first admits to himself what he saw. Then he sees that the knowing is now his and cannot be handed back. Last, he asks what turning away from the wrong would cost and what it would protect. He walks to the counter and tells the customer. This is Arjuna's view in his dilemma, and the Gita goes on to test it. Ordinary experience does confirm that a thing noticed is hard to unnotice. The verse does not promise that the clear-seeing is right in every case, and it does not settle what Arjuna should finally do.
