The story · English
Suta spoke to the sages. At this time Narada, the best of sages and a son of Brahma, humble in heart, set his mind on penance. In the Himalaya there was a beautiful cave, and near it the divine river flowed swiftly, always. There stood a wonderful hermitage, full of every beauty. Narada went there, saw the cave, and practiced austerity for a very long time. He fixed his seat firmly, kept silent, controlled his breath, and cleared his mind. Then he entered deep meditation, in which one knows, "I am Brahman." This is the knowledge that lets a person see Brahman face to face. While Narada practiced this way, Indra, the king of the gods, began to tremble, shaken and tormented in mind.
Indra thought, "This sage wants my kingdom." So he set about breaking Narada's penance. He called to mind Kama, the god of desire, and Kama came quickly. Indra, seeing him arrive, spoke with a crooked mind, thinking of his own gain. "Best of friends, great hero, you always do me good. Listen with affection and help me yourself. By your strength the pride of penance in many has been destroyed, and my kingdom stays firm by your favor. Now Narada is practicing austerity in the Himalaya cave, fixing his mind on the Lord of the universe with great restraint. I fear he will ask for my kingdom. Go there today and obstruct his penance." Kama, with Spring as his companion, went proudly and laid out all his arts, and Spring spread its many powers.
But the sage's mind was not disturbed at all. Kama's pride was broken by the grace of Shiva. Listen, Shaunaka and the rest, to the reason. Here Shiva himself once performed great penance, and here he burned Kama to ashes. When the gods and Rati pleaded for Kama's life, Shiva, who brings good to the world, answered: "Kama will live again after some time. But in this place no trick of Kama will work. As far as this land can be seen, the power of his arrows will not move anyone here." So Kama's hope failed. He went up to Indra and told him everything, and what the sage was like. Then Spring went back to his own place. Indra was astonished and praised Narada, not knowing the story, deceived by Shiva's maya. That maya is hard for any creature to understand, and without devotion the world is bewildered by it.
By Shiva's grace Narada stayed on a long while, then thought his penance complete and stopped. Believing he had defeated Kama, he grew proud, his knowledge gone, bewildered by Shiva's maya. Not even Vishnu or Brahma can see the end of that maya. He hurried to Kailasa, bowed to Rudra, and told him all of it, thinking himself great and Kama beaten. Shiva, kind to his devotees, listened and said: "Dear Narada, wise one, you are blessed. Hear me. Never say this anywhere, above all not before Vishnu. Even if asked, do not repeat what you told me. Keep it secret, always." He said this to him again and again, for Narada was dear to him as a devotee of Vishnu. But Narada, deluded, did not take it as kindness. Then he went to Brahma's world and boasted of his victory. Brahma, remembering Shiva's feet, knew the cause and forbade his son. Narada ignored him too.
Narada then went straight to Vishnu's world, his mind swollen with pride, to tell his tale. Vishnu saw him coming, rose, went to meet him, and embraced him, knowing the reason. He seated him and, remembering Shiva's feet, said: "Where are you coming from, and why have you come? You are blessed, and I am made holy by your visit." Narada, proud, told everything with boasting. Vishnu listened, understood it all, and praised Shiva with folded hands and bowed head: "God of gods, Mahadeva, be gracious. Blessed are you, and blessed is your maya that bewilders all." Then he closed his eyes in meditation and learned what Shiva wanted. He said to the sage: "You are blessed, a treasure of penance. Anyone without devotion falls to lust and delusion. You are a lifelong celibate, full of knowledge. How could you be touched by desire?" Narada laughed within, bowed, and answered: "Lord, if you are kind to me, what power does Kama have?" Then he bowed again and went away, wandering as he pleased.
