The sages asked Suta, the great teller of old stories: when the sage Narada left Vishnu, what did Vishnu do next, and where did Narada go? Suta bowed in thought to Shiva and began. Narada went on his way as he pleased. Then, by Shiva's will, Vishnu, master of illusion, made an illusion. In the middle of the sage's road stood a vast city, a hundred yojanas across, more beautiful than Vishnu's own world, rich with every kind of thing, crowded with men and women and with people of all four classes. Its king was Shilanidhi, a man of wealth and good character. He was holding a great festival, for his daughter's svayamvara, and princes had come from all four directions, dressed in fine clothes, eager to be chosen by her.
Narada saw the city and was bewildered by it. Stirred by desire, he went curious to the king's gate. Shilanidhi saw the great sage arrive, seated him on a jeweled throne and honored him. Then he brought his daughter, Shrimati, and laid her at Narada's feet. Narada looked at her in wonder. "Who is this, king? She is like a child of the gods." The king folded his hands. "She is my daughter, sage, Shrimati by name. She is ready for marriage and looking for a husband. Tell me her fortune, and what kind of man she will get." Narada, already wanting her and overcome by desire, answered: "King, your daughter is blessed, like Lakshmi herself. Her husband will be lord of all, unconquered, a hero equal to Shiva, a conqueror of desire." Then he took his leave.
But the sage was now helpless with longing, deluded by Shiva's power. He thought: how can I win her? Among so many kings, how would she choose me? Beauty is dear to every woman. If she sees it in me, she will surely be mine. So Narada hurried to Vishnu's world, bowed to him and said, "I will tell you my whole story in private." Vishnu said, "Speak." "Your devoted king Shilanidhi has a daughter, Shrimati, the loveliest woman in the three worlds. I want to marry her now, Vishnu. Princes have come by the thousand. If you give me your form, she will surely choose me, for she will put her garland on no one else. Give me your own form, lord. I am your servant, and dear to you."
Hearing this, Vishnu smiled. He knew Shiva's power was at work, and out of compassion he answered: "Go where you wish, sage. I will do what is good for you, as a good physician does for the sick, because you are dearer to me than most." He gave Narada his own form, but he gave him the face of a monkey, and then he vanished. Narada, delighted, believed he had got what he came for, and never saw the trick. He went straight to the hall where the svayamvara was held, crowded with princes, bright as the court of Indra, and sat among the kings, thinking happily, "She will choose no one but me, wearing Vishnu's form." He did not know his face was ugly. The people there saw only his old form; neither the princes nor the others noticed any change.
Two attendants of Rudra had come there to watch over him, hidden in the shape of brahmins. Thinking him a fool, they went close and mocked him, whispering to each other: "Look, Narada, a form as fine as Vishnu's, and a face like a monkey's, hideous and frightening. This one wants a princess, and is deluded by desire." Narada, blind with longing, did not hear. He only stared at Shrimati. She came in from the women's rooms with her attendants, carrying a golden garland, and walked through the hall looking for her chosen husband. She saw a monkey face on a Vishnu body, and was angry. Frightened, she found no husband among them. Then Vishnu arrived in the shape of a king, unseen by all but her. She smiled and put the garland on his neck. He took her and vanished to his own place. The princes were left in despair. Narada was beside himself. The two attendants said, "Narada, you are deluded for nothing. Look at your own face, like a monkey's." He looked in a mirror, saw a monkey's face, and in sudden rage cursed them: "You mocked a brahmin. Be born as demons, in the shape of that mockery." The two attendants, wise, understood that he was deluded. They said nothing. They went back to their place and praised Shiva, holding that everything is always Shiva's will.
