The sages said to Suta, "You have told a wonderful tale. Shiva's power of illusion is blessed, and all that moves and stands is under it. Tell us what the angry sage Narada did, burning with desire, after the two attendants of Shambhu had gone." Suta answered. Narada had already cursed the two attendants, as he thought they deserved. Then he looked at his face in the water. By Shiva's will he did not wake to what had happened. He remembered only the trick Hari had played on him. Filled with a rage almost impossible to bear, he went to Vishnu's realm. He burned like a fire fed with kindling, his knowledge lost by Shiva's will, and his words came out full of insults.
Narada said, "Hari, you are a wicked deceiver, a bewilderer of the world. You cannot bear another's joy. You are full of illusion and a dark heart. Long ago you took the form of Mohini and cheated the demons. You gave them wine and not the nectar. If Rudra, the great lord, had not taken pity and drunk the poison, your whole illusion would have been ruined. Trickery is dear to you above all. You are not good by nature, and your master has made you free to do as you like. Today I will teach you, so you never do such a thing again. You have felt no fear until now, and you have never been checked by anyone strong. Now you will get the fruit of your own deeds."
Having spoken, the sage, deluded by illusion and weary with anger, showed the fire of a Brahmin and cursed Vishnu. "You made me frantic over a woman. Take the form you used to deceive me, and become a man, and share the grief of it. Those whose faces you made me wear, the monkeys, will be your helpers. You cause others sorrow, so suffer the pain of parting from your wife, living as a man, lost in ignorance." So Narada cursed Hari, deluded in his ignorance. Vishnu took the curse and praised the unborn illusion of Shambhu. Then Shambhu, whose play is vast, drew his illusion back. Narada, who had been fooled by it though wise, became clear again as before. He came to himself, shaken, and blamed himself again and again.
He praised Shambhu's illusion, which bewilders even the wise. Understanding the whole delusion, Narada, best of Vishnu's devotees, fell at Vishnu's feet. Raised up by Hari, he said, "I spoke evil words, fooled and foolish. Make the curse I gave you false, my lord. I have done a great sin and will surely go to hell. I am your servant. Tell me what to do, so that my sin is destroyed and I do not fall to hell." He fell at Vishnu's feet again, in sorrow and devotion. Vishnu lifted him and spoke gently. "Do not grieve, my devotee. You are the best of them. You will not go to hell. Shiva will bring you peace. You went against Shiva's words in pride, and he gave you this fruit. All of it came by his will."
Vishnu said that Shankara breaks pride, the supreme Brahman, beyond the three qualities. Through his illusion he becomes three: Brahma creates, Vishnu keeps the worlds, and Rudra destroys. "Chant the hundred names of Shiva without wavering, and your sin will perish. Do not grieve. You did little. Shambhu did it all by his own will. He took your mind away, gave you the torment of desire, and had you curse me, so that he could show his own ways to the world. No one is dear to me like Shiva. Worship him, hear his glory, wear ash and rudraksha beads, and chant the six-syllable mantra. Visit Shiva's holy places, then Anandavana. See Vishwesvara there and worship him. Then go to Brahma, your father, and ask him of Shiva's greatness." So Vishnu taught Narada, bowed to Shiva, praised him, and vanished.
