Narada said to Brahma, "You are fortunate. You have told me the wonderful story of Shiva, and the birth of the lingam. Now tell me what came after, and how creation was made." Brahma answered that he would tell it briefly, as he had heard it. The god Shiva had vanished from sight. Brahma and Vishnu felt great joy, and they put away the forms of the swan and the boar. Narada asked why those two forms had been taken. Brahma said the swan can tell truth from untruth, as it parts milk from water, yet as a swan he had found no such wisdom. The boar goes down, and Vishnu took that form for the sake of the world. From that day the age is called the Boar Age.

Then Vishnu bowed to Sadashiva, instructed Brahma, and vanished. He went beyond the egg of the universe to Vaikuntha, and lives there still. Brahma remembered Shiva and Vishnu, and threw a handful into the water made earlier. From it came an egg of twenty-four parts. It was lifeless and heavy. Brahma doubted, and for twelve years he performed terrible austerity, fixed on Vishnu. Vishnu appeared, touched Brahma's limbs with joy and said, "Ask a boon. By Shiva's grace I can give anything." Brahma answered, "Bring this egg to life." Vishnu took an endless form and entered it, with a thousand heads, eyes and feet. The egg woke. Vishnu ruled there as the Viraj, and Shiva's Kailasa was made above all.

Brahma, by Shiva's command, set out to create. First came a dark creation of ignorance, born of his own will. He made the still things, then the animals, but that creation was full of suffering and did not serve. Then came the gods, and then humans, and last the spirits. This was the fivefold creation. His five sons, Sanaka and the others, were great in renunciation and refused to create. They thought only of Shiva. Brahma grew furious and deluded, and tears of rage fell from his eyes. Vishnu came at once and told him, "Perform austerity to Shiva." Brahma did so. Then from between his brows, from the place called Avimukta, Shiva appeared, half woman, half man, Nilalohita.

Brahma bowed in joy and said, "Create many beings." Rudra made a host of Rudras like himself. Brahma said again, "Lord, these beings are gripped by the fear of birth and death. Create them." Shiva laughed and said, "I will not create beings caught in birth and death fear, sunk in an ocean of sorrow by their actions. I will lift them out by giving true knowledge. You create them, Brahma. By my command you will not be bound by illusion." Then he vanished before Brahma's eyes, with his host. Brahma made the elements and the sky, wind, fire, water, earth, mountains, seas and the ages. Still unsatisfied, he made the sages: Marici, Bhrigu, Angiras, Pulaha, Pulastya, Vasishtha, Kratu, Atri, Daksha, Kardama, and Narada. He made Dharma from his intention.

Shiva stirred Brahma within. He divided his body in two, a man and a woman. The man was Svayambhuva Manu, the woman Shatarupa. They married, and had Priyavrata, Uttanapada and three daughters, Akuti, Devahuti and Prasuti. Akuti was given to Ruci, Devahuti to Kardama, Prasuti to Daksha. Their children filled the world. Akuti bore Yajna and Dakshina, and they had twelve sons. Daksha gave thirteen daughters to Dharma, among them Shraddha, Lakshmi, Dhriti, Tushti, Pushti and Medha. Others he gave to the moon, to Kashyapa, and to the sages. Gods, sages, demons, trees, birds, mountains were born. Nothing in the egg, from the underworld to Satyaloka, was empty.

Sati was guarded on Rudra's trident and born of Daksha. She was married to Shankara, left her body at her father's sacrifice, and returned to her own place. She was born again as Parvati, did great austerity, and came back to Shiva. Her names include Kalika, Chandika, Durga, Amba, Mridani and Sarvamangala. Brahma said Shiva is the supreme Brahman, without qualities and without end. Vishnu is his left side, Brahma his right, and Rudra is born from his heart. Vishnu is sattva, Brahma rajas, Rudra tamas. These three differ only by quality. Shiva plays freely with Shivā, the goddess, in his lovely realm. Rudra is his full incarnation. The five-faced one made Kailasa his home. When the universe ends, Kailasa does not end.
