The Body Offered

Shiva Sutras 2.8

Meaning · English

The body is the offering, poured into the fire of consciousness.

Two words carry this sutra. Sharira is the body, from a root meaning to wear away: the thing that decays. Havis is the oblation, whatever is poured into a sacrificial fire. Between them is the plain sense: the body is the offering. A third word completes the picture. Caitanya is consciousness, the awareness in which everything is known. The sutra names no fire, but the commentary supplies it. The fire is consciousness, and the body goes into it. Shiva teaches this inside the shakta way, the second of the three. Shambhava is entry by will alone. Anava is entry through a method of breath, form and place. Shakta sits between them: it works by the mind's own power of knowing, with no outer support. The body is the nearest and heaviest thing the mind holds as its own, so it is the first thing offered. The Vartika reads it this way. The body, gross and subtle, is poured into the fire of the great yogi's awareness. Offered there, it stops being a separate owner's possession and is seen as a form of what knows it. The commentators agree that the offering is a way of seeing the body. It is not a harm done to the body.

1. Sit or lie where the body can be still, and let it be heavy. 2. Feel the whole body at once: its weight, its outline, where it touches the floor. 3. Hold it as something placed before a fire, and let the awareness that feels it be that fire. 4. When the mind wanders, notice that it has, and place the body in the fire again. 5. Stop when the body no longer feels like a separate thing you carry.
