The verse and its meaning · Shiva Sutras · Body as Offering
Knowing as Food
Shiva Sutras 2.9
Meaning · English
Knowing is food, and what is known is eaten.
Two words carry this sutra. Jnana is knowing, from the root jna, to know. Anna is food, what is eaten and taken in. The sutra sets them side by side: knowing is food. Earlier in the work, Shiva calls knowing a bond, bandha, a tie. That is the knowing that grasps a thing and says it is the self, so the knower is bound to it. Here the same knowing is food. A thing eaten is not held at arm's length. It is taken in, and the one who eats stays whole. So each thing known is met by awareness and absorbed into it, leaving no separate object behind. The sutra teaches this through the image of eating, and it belongs to shakta, the middle way, where the work is done by the mind's own power of knowing and not by a fixed method. It rests on the sutra before it, where the body is the offering. The body was given into the fire, and now knowing is what the fire consumes. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, takes knowing of objects as what the awareness of the yogi feeds on. Bhaskara adds a warning. If the yogi grows careless, even a knower can swell with pride in his own steadiness, and then knowing binds again.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, eyes open or closed. 2. Let one thing be known: a sound, the light on a wall, the touch of your clothes. 3. Notice that the knowing takes it in. Nothing stays outside it. 4. When the mind runs to a thought, the thought is also known. Let it be taken in the same way. 5. Stop when the sitting feels finished, and let the next thing you meet be known the same way.
