When Clarity Dims
Shiva Sutras 2.10
Meaning · English
When clear knowing is drawn in, a dream-seeing rises out of it.
Four words carry this sutra. Vidya is clear knowing, from the root vid, to know. Here it is the plain, steady light of awareness, and it has no object-bound opinions in it. Samhara is drawing in, a folding away, like gathering a cloth. Svapna is dream. Darshana is seeing. So the sutra says that when clear knowing is folded away, a dream-like seeing rises out of that very place. The sutra gives no other cause. Right before it, 2.8 gave the body as the offering and 2.9 gave knowing as the food. If knowing is what is taken in and held, then its withdrawal leaves a gap, and the mind fills the gap with pictures: separate things, stories, this and that. Shiva teaches this in the shakta way, the path of the mind's own movement of knowing. It sits between shambhava, which needs no effort, and anava, which works through outer means. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes it that when the clear knowing of one's own nature slips, a dream-like seeing of divided things appears. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that this happens to the practitioner who has grown careless about the highest self, and it calls the dream a flood of dividing thoughts.
A coat hangs on a hook in a hallway. While the lamp is bright, it is plainly a coat. When the lamp is turned low, it becomes a stranger standing there. The coat is the clear knowing, and the stranger is the dream that rises when the light is drawn in.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing a cup or walking to a shop, and give it your plain attention for five minutes. 2. Notice the moment your attention slips and a story, plan or worry starts to run. 3. Say quietly to yourself, "dream," and return to the task. 4. At night, recall once when it happened and what was happening just before.
