Meaning · English

Pleased, the great-souled Yama said to him: "Here is one more gift, freely given. This fire will carry your name, and take this chain of many colors as well."

Yama has already granted the boon Nachiketas asked for, and has taught him the fire rite. Now he adds something nobody requested. Three words carry the verse. Mahatma is a great soul: mahat, great, and atman, self. The text uses it for Yama, a giver who is generous beyond what is owed. Varam is a boon, a chosen gift. Here it is a bonus, bhuyah, more. Nama is a name. The fire will be called the Nachiketa fire, so the rite keeps the boy's name for as long as it is practised. Yama also gives a many-colored chain, which the text does not explain further. Yama gives because he is pleased, satisfied by how exactly Nachiketas learned. The gifts answer the boy's care. They are not bargained for. The verse asks the listener to see that real learning can earn recognition without being sought. Shankara reads the many-colored chain as a garland of varied gems, an ornament, and says the fire's naming is a reward for the boy's attentiveness. He treats both gifts as warm preparation, not as the goal of the teaching.

A shopkeeper finishes teaching a new apprentice the whole trade, then, seeing it was learned well, hangs the apprentice's name above the door and presses a small keepsake into their hand. Nobody asked for either. Yama's naming of the fire and his gift of the chain are that unasked extra, given out of pleasure.

1. Today, pick one small thing you were taught by someone, a recipe, a route, a repair. Do it carefully, the way they showed you. 2. Afterward, tell that person plainly that you did it and how it went. Take five minutes. 3. If someone does something well for you today, give a small unasked thanks, a word or a cup of tea. 4. Notice how it feels to receive or give something beyond what was owed.

A woman has spent a month learning to do her late father's accounts so the family shop can open again. On the last evening she checks every entry against his ledger, line by line. The old clerk who has been showing her sees it, closes the book, and says the new ledger will carry her name on the cover, and hands her her father's pen. The verse speaks to this moment. Yama has just heard Nachiketas repeat the whole rite back exactly. The first thing that follows is pleasure in the work done well. Then comes recognition, the naming. Last comes a small gift, offered freely. In her moment, the verse would change three things. She would take the credit without embarrassment. She would notice that the extra was not what she worked for. She would see that the care itself was the real wage. The verse does not promise that careful work is always noticed, or that the grief of losing her father lessens. Ordinary experience does confirm that attention given to a task is often seen, and that being seen feels good.
