Meaning · English
One who has kindled this fire three times, joined with all three, and kept the three duties, goes beyond birth and death. Knowing this worthy, shining fire born of Brahman, and seeing it clearly, he comes to a peace without end.
Yama tells Nachiketas what the fire-rite finally gives. Three words carry it. Sandhi means a joining, a meeting point. Here it is the bond with the three who shape a person: father, mother and teacher. Karma means action; the three karmas are study, sacrifice and giving. Shanti means peace, a settling after unrest. The verse says the one who has performed the rite three times, honored those three bonds and kept those three duties crosses beyond birth and death. The fire is called born of Brahman, the whole reality the Upanishads speak of, and worthy of praise. Yama says that when this person knows the fire and looks at it with understanding, lasting peace follows. The reason is plain: rite without knowing stays outside the person, and knowing without a lived life has nothing to rest on. Both are asked for. The listener is asked to see that duty, debts to family and teachers, and understanding belong together. Shankara reads the fire here as Virat, the form of Brahman that holds all that is born, and reads the knowing as the deciding part: the rite prepares, the understanding brings the peace.
A traveler crossing a river needs a built boat and also needs to know where the far bank is. Planks without direction drift; direction without planks sinks. The rites and duties are the boat, the understanding of the fire is the far bank, and peace is stepping onto dry ground.
1. Tonight, name the three people who shaped you most: someone who bore you or raised you, and a teacher. Spend two minutes remembering one thing each gave you. 2. Do one small act for one of them this week: a call, a note, a repaid favor. 3. Choose one of the three duties, learning, offering or giving, and do ten minutes of it today. Notice what it is like when it is done carefully rather than quickly.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father sleeps in the ward. He has been taking care of the paperwork, the medicines, the calls to relatives, and he feels hollow, as if all this doing has no meaning. The verse speaks to him. Yama's teaching ties peace to a life of kept obligations, to father, mother and teacher, and to study, giving and offering, joined with understanding of what they serve. For him, that means the errands are not beside the point. Each one is a bond kept, and seeing that gives the tiredness a shape. He can do the next small task without resentment, and sit with his father without needing it to add up to something more. The text offers this as its own teaching: that such a life, with knowing, leads past birth and death to lasting peace. It does not promise that his father recovers, that grief will be spared, or that medical care can be replaced by good intentions. Ordinary experience does confirm one thing: people who know why they are carrying a burden carry it more steadily.
