Meaning · English

One who knows the three-fold Nachiketa fire, and who, knowing it, builds that fire rightly, throws off the nooses of death before it comes. He goes beyond sorrow and is glad in the world of heaven.

Three words carry the verse. The first is trinachiketa, the one who has the Nachiketa fire three times over: he knows it, builds it, and has been shaped by it. The second is mrityu-pasha. Mrityu is death; pasha is a noose or snare, the cord that holds an animal. The third is shoka, grief, the sorrow that comes from loss and fear of loss. The plain sense is this. Yama tells Nachiketas that a man who both understands the fire-rite and performs it properly is loosened from death's cords while he is still living. Then grief no longer reaches him, and he is glad in heaven. The text joins knowing and doing. Knowing without building, or building without knowing, does not release anyone. Yama says this because he has just given Nachiketas the second boon, a rite named for the boy, and he wants the boy to see what it is worth. It is not a show. It is a practice that changes the person who carries it out. The verse asks the listener to be exact and whole in what they undertake, and to know why they do it. Shankara reads the nooses as the bonds of ignorance, desire and aversion, and says they are thrown off before the body falls. He also takes the knowing as understanding the fire's kinds, its number and its manner of laying.

A person who has only read the fire-exit sign on the wall is not the same as one who has walked the route once, counted the doors and put a hand on the stairwell rail. When the alarm sounds, the second walks calmly. Knowing and doing together are what loosen fear.

1. Choose one task today that you usually do half-attended, such as filling a lamp, preparing a meal or writing an important message. 2. Before starting, say to yourself in one sentence why you do it. 3. Do it start to finish with your full attention, taking about ten minutes, and leave your phone in another room. 4. In the evening, notice whether knowing the reason changed how the task felt or how settled you were afterwards.

A man of fifty-five sits at the kitchen table with a blank form for his will. He has put it off for years, because writing it means looking at his own death. His hand hovers over the first line. The verse, as the Katha gives it, speaks to this moment. Yama tells Nachiketas that fear of death loosens for one who knows and acts, not for one who only avoids the thought. So the man takes it step by step. He learns what each line of the form is for. He writes the names, the house, the instructions for his daughter. He finishes the thing in front of him, and each completed line leaves him a little less afraid. Ordinary experience agrees that dread usually shrinks once a feared task is done carefully. The verse does not promise that death becomes welcome, that grief will not come when someone is lost, or that a form replaces counsel from a lawyer or a doctor where one is needed. It speaks of a freedom that the Katha says grows from knowing and doing together.
