The Second Boon Paid

Katha Upanishad 1.1.19

Meaning · English

Yama tells Nachiketas: this is your fire, the one that leads to heaven, which you chose as your second boon. People will call it by your name alone. Now choose your third boon, Nachiketas.

Three words carry the verse. Agni is fire, here the sacrificial fire Yama has just taught Nachiketas how to build. Svargya means leading to svarga, the heavenly world, so this is a fire whose reward is heaven. Vara is a boon, a gift granted on request, and Nachiketas asked for this one second. Yama is closing an account. The boy asked for the fire, and Yama says it is delivered: this is the fire you chose. He adds that people will speak of it as Nachiketas's own, so the fire carries the boy's name from now on. Then he turns the boy toward the last gift and tells him to choose the third. The reason is plain. Yama has kept his word fully, and a gift finished is a gift named and handed over before the next begins. Shankara reads the fire as a rite of the world of action, a means to heaven, and so hears the third boon as the point where the teaching moves past what rites can give. The verse asks Nachiketas to receive what he asked for, then decide again what he wants.

A tailor finishes the coat, sews the customer's name into the lining, and hands it over across the counter. Then he picks up the tape measure for the next order. The coat is the fire, named for Nachiketas and complete. The tape measure is the third boon, still open.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you asked for and got in the past year, such as a job, a room, or a person's help. Say aloud that it has been given. 2. Write down who made it possible, in one line each. Spend two minutes on this. 3. Then ask yourself what you actually want next. Write one sentence, and notice whether it is the same kind of thing as the last one.

A village carpenter has spent three weeks on his first chair. A buyer takes it, pays, and asks his name for the label. He gives it. Then the buyer says, what else can you make me? The verse speaks to that moment. First, the carpenter stops and sees that the thing he asked of his own hands is finished and is his. Second, he lets his name be attached to it, without hiding it or inflating it. Third, he faces the next request with a clear head, not carrying leftover wanting from the last one. Ordinary experience confirms that people who skip the first step often reach for the next goal while still restless about the old one. The verse does not promise that the next choice will be easy or wise, and it does not say what Nachiketas will ask. It also does not settle any worry about money, work or health that the carpenter still has. It describes a boon completed and a new choice opened.
