Meaning · English

Nachiketas says: when a man has died, this doubt remains. Some say he still is. Others say he is not. Taught by you, I want to know this. Of my boons, this is the third.

Nachiketas names his third boon, and it is a question. The key word is vicikitsa, doubt. It comes from a root meaning to want to know, so it is a doubt that will not rest, not an idle shrug. The second word is prete, one who has departed, a person who has died. The third is anushishta, taught, instructed: he asks to be taught by Yama, not to guess. The plain sense is this. When a person dies, people disagree. Some say he still is. Others say he is not. Nachiketas will not pick a side by habit or by hearsay. He goes to the one who ought to know, because Yama is Death himself. His reason is the problem he lives inside. The two earlier boons settled his father's anger and the fire rite. Neither answers what happens at the end of a life. He asks that the question be answered by a teacher, not left to argument. What it asks of the listener is to admit a real question honestly, and to ask the right person. Shankara reads the doubt as a doubt about the self: whether something remains after the body falls. He takes the boon as a request for knowledge of the atman, the self, not for a rite.

A traveler comes to a fork where two signposts point opposite ways, and the villagers argue over which is right. He does not toss a coin. He walks on until he finds someone who has taken both roads. The fork is the dispute over death, and the one who has walked both roads is Yama.

1. Pick one question you have been carrying and avoiding, about illness, loss or what matters to you. Write it as one plain sentence. 2. Notice whether you have been quietly answering it by habit or by what others say. Write down which. 3. Name one person who has actually lived through it or studied it. Ask them this week, and listen without arguing.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at night. Her father has died an hour ago. A cousin says he is at peace. Another says that is the end. She feels pulled both ways and tired of being told things. Nachiketas's request changes her moment in small steps. First, she may let the question stand as a question, without forcing herself to settle it tonight. Second, she may notice which answers she is simply borrowing. Third, she may decide whom she trusts to speak of it, a priest, a teacher, an elder, and ask later, when she can hear. The Katha treats the question as one worth a teacher, not a shame. Ordinary experience agrees that a question pressed down in grief tends to return, and that being heard by a person who has sat with loss helps. The verse does not promise an answer in that corridor. It does not lift the grief, and it does not replace the doctors, family and rest she needs that night.
