Twilight After the Offering
Shiva Tandava Stotram 17
Meaning · English
At twilight, as worship ends, whoever recites the ten-headed one's song, devoted to Shiva, is given by Shiva, when he is pleased, steady fortune with chariots, elephants and horses.
The ten-headed one is Ravana, and the song is called his. The time is twilight, as the day's worship is being finished, and the reciter is someone already given to worshipping Shiva. Then comes the fruit the hymn itself claims: fortune that stays put, described the way a king's wealth was measured then, in chariots, elephants and horses. It arrives when Shiva is pleased, as his gift rather than a wage.
Picture the end of a handwritten letter. The writer signs their name, then adds one last line of good wishes for whoever reads it. The hymn closes the same way. Ravana's name appears as the singer, and the final line is a wish of lasting fortune for anyone who keeps reading his song at dusk.
