Reading It Every Day
Shiva Tandava Stotram 16
Meaning · English
Whoever daily reads, remembers, recites this finest hymn grows ever purer, quickly reaches devotion to Hara the teacher; no other way. Thinking of Shankara clears the confusion of embodied beings.
The hymn turns from describing Shiva to what it does for whoever keeps it. Three ways of holding it are named: reading it, carrying it in memory, speaking it aloud. Done daily, these make a person pure, and keep making them pure. Next comes devotion to Hara, Shiva as teacher, and it comes quickly; no other route is offered. Last, simply thinking of Shankara, the one who does good, undoes the confusion that comes with living in a body.
A brass pot scrubbed every morning stays bright; left for a week, it dulls. The shine is never won once and kept. Purity works that way here: a continuing state, renewed each time the hymn is read, remembered or spoken, not a single washing that lasts.
