May the cry 'Shiva,' a mantra worn like jewellery, win the world: fierce as undersea fire against ill, called out by women seeking the eight powers, sounded at the doe-eyed bride's wedding.
Everything turns on one sound: the name Shiva. The hymn calls it a mantra worn as an ornament. Then it piles up what that sound is like. It burns off bad fortune the way the old fire said to live under the ocean burns without going out. It is the call raised by women who long for the eight great powers, chattering as at a celebration. It is the cry at the wedding of the doe-eyed bride. The closing line asks that this name rise and win the world.
Think of a small pendant with one name stamped on it, worn on a chain every day. Nobody keeps it for special occasions; it goes to the market and to weddings alike, catching light whenever the wearer moves. That is the name Shiva here: not kept in a box for worship, but carried on the voice as daily jewellery.

आभूषण की तरह धारण किया गया मंत्र, 'शिव' का उद्घोष, जगत को जीते: अमंगल के लिए समुद्र के भीतर की आग-सा प्रचंड, आठों शक्तियाँ चाहने वाली स्त्रियों द्वारा पुकारा गया, मृगनयनी दुलहन के विवाह में गूँजा हुआ।
सब कुछ एक ही ध्वनि पर टिका है: शिव का नाम। स्तोत्र इसे आभूषण की तरह पहना गया मंत्र कहता है। फिर वह गिनाता चलता है कि वह ध्वनि कैसी है। वह दुर्भाग्य को वैसे ही जला डालती है जैसे सागर के नीचे बसी कही जाने वाली वह प्राचीन आग बिना बुझे जलती रहती है। वह वही पुकार है जो आठ महाशक्तियों की चाह रखने वाली स्त्रियाँ उठाती हैं, मानो उत्सव में चहक रही हों। वह मृगनयनी दुलहन के विवाह की पुकार है। अंतिम पंक्ति माँगती है कि यह नाम उठे और जगत को जीत ले।
एक छोटे-से लटकन की कल्पना कीजिए, जिस पर एक ही नाम अंकित हो और जिसे रोज़ ज़ंजीर में पहना जाता हो। उसे कोई विशेष अवसरों के लिए सँभालकर नहीं रखता; वह बाज़ार भी जाता है और विवाहों में भी, और पहनने वाला जब भी हिलता है, वह रोशनी पकड़ लेता है। यहाँ शिव का नाम वैसा ही है: पूजा के लिए डिब्बे में बंद नहीं, बल्कि रोज़ के गहने की तरह वाणी पर धारण किया हुआ।
