The Mind Beneath Life-Force

Taittiriya Upanishad 2.3.1

Meaning · English

Gods, people and animals breathe by the life-force, the lifespan of all beings. Within it is a self made of mind, person-shaped, with the Vedas as its limbs.

Prana is breath, the force that keeps anything alive. Gods, people and animals all run on it, and when it leaves, life ends, so it is called the life of all. The text says those who revere breath as Brahman, the one reality, live out their full span. Inside the breath-self is a self made of mind that fills it completely. It too has a person's shape: Yajur Veda as head, Rig and Sama as the two sides, teaching as the trunk, the Atharva hymns as tail and footing.

Pull a wool glove onto your hand. From outside you see only the glove, fingers and thumb. But the shape comes from the hand inside, which fills every finger. The breath-self is the glove here; the mind is the hand, the same person-shaped outline, filling it from within.
