Meaning · English
Words and thought turn back without reaching it; whoever knows that joy never fears. Inside the mind is a self of understanding: faith its head, order and truth its wings.
Speech and thought both set out toward the joy of Brahman, the reality underneath everything, and both come back without arriving. A person who knows that joy is never afraid. Then the teacher goes one layer deeper than the mind and finds a self made of understanding, the settled knowing that decides what is so. It has a person's shape. Faith is its head. Order, living in step with how things are, is one wing. Truth is the other. Steady focus is its trunk. Greatness is the tail it rests on.
A glove lying on a table is limp and shapeless. Slip a hand into it and every finger stands up in the right place. The glove is the mind, with its words and plans. The hand inside is understanding, the firm sense of what is true, which fills the mind and gives it its shape.
