Meaning · English
Understanding carries out rituals and deeds; the gods honor it as Brahman. Within it lies a self of bliss: what is dear its head, delight its wings, Brahman its base.
Understanding, the part that knows and decides, carries out rituals and everyday work, so the gods honor it as Brahman, the highest reality, in its first form. Whoever holds to this without slipping back into treating the body as the self leaves wrongdoing behind with the body and enjoys every wish. Still, understanding is an outer layer. Within it is a self of bliss, pictured as a bird: what is dear is the head, delight and greater delight the two wings, bliss the trunk, Brahman the tail it rests on.
Picture a hand inside a woolen glove. The glove has five fingers only because a hand with five fingers fills it from inside. Pull the hand out and the glove goes limp. Understanding is the glove. The self of bliss is the hand within it, filling it and giving it the same shape.
