World Made of Imagining

Meaning · English
Just so, hold the whole world as burnt away down to its imagining. For one whose mind rests on nothing else, the supreme state of being comes to be.
Three words carry it. Vikalpa comes from a root meaning to fashion in different ways. It is the habit of cutting what is seen into this and that, each piece named, liked or disliked. Ananyacetas means a mind with no second thing: an-anya, not other, plus cetas, mind. Pumbhava joins pums, person, with bhava, state of being. It names the condition of being fully what a person is, and the text calls it supreme. Now the clauses. Just so points back to the same burning pictured just before. The whole world is held as burnt, and what burns is the imagining, the naming and dividing layer, so that the sight itself is no longer carved up. The mind that holds this has no other object. Then the supreme state of being would come. The text says would, not will. The doorway is an ordinary moment opened from inside. Whatever you look at is already half made by your own sorting. Take that sorting away in imagination, and what is left is the plain fact of being aware, with nothing standing beside it.
1. Sit somewhere you will not be moved for ten minutes, and let your eyes rest on the room or on a spot near you. 2. Picture everything you see burnt down, not as ruin but as every name and judgement burnt off it. 3. Keep the picture on the whole world at once, not on one object. 4. When a second thing pulls at you, a plan or a comment on how you are doing, notice it and come back to the single picture. 5. When the ten minutes end, let the picture go and look around slowly.
The tradition's account runs like this. The world you live in is built by the mind's constructing. When that construction is held as burnt, the mind's movement stops, its supports drop away, and awareness is left knowing itself. The one who is aware is then what the text calls the supreme state of being. A sitter tends to meet the difficulty first. The picture of burning keeps turning into a story, with flames, a fire and a reason for it. The mind also slips to a second object, such as a thought about whether this is working. Small signs may show. A name drops off an object for a moment, and a room looks less like a list of things. The gap between one thought and the next may feel a little wider. The usual ways it goes wrong are two. One is forcing a blank, which tightens the face and brow. The other is treating the world as truly gone, when only its labelling is held as burnt.
