Everything, Taken in Order
Vijnana Bhairava 56
Meaning · English
Think of everything as worlds, paths and the rest, taking it step by step: the gross, the fine, the beyond. Keep on until, at the very end, the mind dissolves.
Three words carry it. Bhuvana is a world, a place where beings dwell. Adhvan is a path, a way along which the universe is laid out. Together they stand for the whole ordered cosmos, from what is nearest to what is furthest. Krama is step, sequence: nothing is skipped or grabbed at once. Laya is melting, the way salt goes into water and is no longer a separate thing. The clauses run in order. Contemplate the whole of what exists as worlds and paths. Do it one step at a time. Let each step be seen at its level: gross, fine, or beyond both. Continue until, at the end, the mind itself dissolves. The doorway is the ordinary moment. Whatever you are aware of right now already sits at one of these levels. Going through them in order is just thinking, used up from the inside. Each step hands the mind something to hold, and the last step leaves nothing to hold. The mind is not forced to stop. It reaches the end of its own list.
1. Sit steadily with your spine upright and your eyes soft or closed. 2. Begin with the grossest: the room, the ground, the things around you. Hold them as one world. 3. Move to what is finer: sensations, then thoughts, then the sense of being aware. Take one step at a time. 4. Let the last step be what lies beyond both. Do not make a picture of it. 5. When you wander, go back to the step you were on and carry on in order. 6. Stay until the steps run out and thinking has nothing left to take up. Then rest, and end when you are ready.
The tradition's account: the mind lives by moving from one support to the next. Give it the whole of existence in sequence, and each support is set down as the next is taken up. At the end no support remains, the mind's movement ceases, and awareness is left knowing itself. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The body only needs to be steady and upright enough that it stops asking for attention. The first difficulty is that the sequence will not stay tidy. The mind jumps from the room to a memory to a vague idea of everything. Coming back to the order is most of the work. Another snag is turning the last stage into a picture, a bright space or a vast image, which is still a gross thing. Signs it is working are small: fewer jumps, a sense of running out of next steps, a quieter gap where a thought would have come. The usual wrong turn is a dull blankness or drowsiness, which is a dimming of attention, not a dissolving.
