The Far Edge of Everything
Vijnana Bhairava 57
Meaning · English
Go to the outer limits of this whole universe, on every side, by taking its paths one after another. Rest there on the principle of Shiva, and a great rising comes.
Three words carry the verse. Adhvan is a path, a course you travel in stages. The tradition lays the universe out as a series of such paths, from the gross to the subtle, and prakriya is the way of working through them in order. Tattva is a principle, literally 'that-ness', what a thing is at bottom. Shaiva tattva is the principle of Shiva, the ground under all the stages. Mahodaya is a great rising, a large coming-up. Now the clauses. Take this entire universe. Go to its outer limits, and on every side, not one direction only. Do it by the paths, step by step, so the edge is reached by a walk and not by a leap. At the edge, hold the Shiva principle in meditation. Then comes the great rising. Why this works as a doorway: the ordinary moment is your own small world, a room, a body, a thought. Bhairava opens that moment from inside by stretching it outward until it has no further side. A mind that has reached every limit has nowhere left to go, and what remains is the principle the whole layout stood on.
1. Sit still with your eyes soft, or closed. 2. Bring to mind what is nearest: this room, then the place around it, then further out, step by step. 3. Keep going until you reach the outer limit of everything. Go there on every side, not in one direction only. 4. At the edge, hold the principle of Shiva in your attention. Stay with that. 5. When the mind wanders, return to the last stage you remember and walk outward again. 6. Stop when the walking has dropped away and your attention is resting.
The tradition's account: the mind moves because it always has somewhere further to go. Walk it through the paths until no further place remains, and the movement stops. The support of each stage drops away as the next is passed. What is left is the Shiva principle, awareness resting in itself, and the text calls that resting a great rising. What a sitter tends to notice: the first difficulty is that the universe turns into a picture, a dark space with dots, and the attention stays on the picture. The edge keeps sliding away or becomes a wall. Many people go in one direction only and forget the other sides. The small signs it is working are quieter. The body feels less like the centre. The thoughts that arrive seem to have more room around them, and there are stretches where nothing is being pictured and the attention is simply there. The usual wrong turn is to treat the rest at the edge as one more thing to look at, and then to look harder.
