Gaze on Dappled Light

Vijnana Bhairava 76

Meaning · English

When the light of sun, lamp and the like has made the sky mottled with many shades, let the gaze be set down right there. One's own nature shines forth.

Three words carry it. Shabalikrita means made variegated, streaked, dappled: the light of the sun or a lamp falls on the open air and the sky stops being one flat colour. Drishti is the gaze, the act of seeing and not only the eyes. Niveshya means to be settled in, set down and made to stay. The instruction is to take the looking and put it down in that mixed, lit space and leave it there. The words 'and the like' widen the sources: any light that colours the air counts, not only the sun. 'Right there' closes off wandering. The gaze does not go looking for a better view or a purer light. Svatmarupa, one's own form, is what shines (prakashate, lights up). The text does not say a new thing arrives. It says what was already one's own nature becomes plain. The logic is the one Bhairava uses throughout: an ordinary moment, light on air, is entered from inside. When the eye stops reaching for objects and rests in a field with no single thing to grasp, the one who is looking is left in view.

1. Go where you can see open sky or a lit space, at a time when sun or lamplight is colouring the air. 2. Settle your body so it needs no attention. Sit or stand, whichever is easier. 3. Let your eyes rest on the mottled light in the air, not on the sun or the bulb. Keep the gaze soft. 4. When the eyes jump to an object, let them come back to the mixed light in the same place. 5. Stay with the looking itself and notice who is looking. 6. Stop when the gaze tires. Close your eyes for a moment.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because the eye keeps picking objects, one after another. Dappled light in open sky offers no single object to pick. The movement of seeing loses its support, the mind quiets, and awareness is left knowing itself. That self-shining is called one's own nature. What a sitter tends to notice: the eyes want to land on a cloud edge, a branch, the lamp itself. At first the gaze keeps jumping. Then it softens, the colours seem to blend, and the sense of looking out at something thins. Small signs it is working are a still face, slower blinking and a quiet in the head. Common ways it goes wrong: staring hard until the eyes ache, drifting into daydream, or waiting for a vision and treating the waiting as the practice. Tension around the eyes usually means the gaze is being forced.
