A Fixed Gaze, Then Nothing

Vijnana Bhairava 80

Meaning · English

Let a steady, unmoving gaze fall on a thing of solid form. Then, before long, making the mind without any support, one goes to Shiva.

Three phrases carry the verse. Sthula-rupa means gross form: a thing with plain outline, something you can see and touch, like a wall, a pot or a stone. Stabdha drishti means a gaze that has gone stiff and still. The eyes stop roaming and stay on one thing. Niradhara means without support. Adhara is what holds something up, so the mind is made like something with no floor under it. The clauses run in order. First the gaze is set on a solid object and held there. Then, after a short while, the mind is made to have no support. The object that was holding it is let go. The verse names the end of this as going to Shiva. The doorway works like this. An ordinary object is the most ordinary moment there is. The mind leans on it, as it leans on everything it looks at. Hold the gaze there until the leaning is plain, then remove the thing leaned on. What is left is the mind with nothing to rest on, which the text treats as its own nature, not a new state.

1. Sit comfortably and choose one plain, solid thing a little way off, such as a wall mark, a cup or a stone. 2. Rest your gaze on it and keep it there, still. Let your blinking happen on its own. 3. When the mind comments or wanders, bring the gaze back to the thing. 4. After a while, let go of the object in your mind. Do not push it away. Let the mind stay with nothing under it. 5. When the object or a thought returns, notice it and keep the mind without support again. 6. Stop when the eyes tire or the time is up.

The tradition's account runs like this. The mind moves because it is carried from object to object. A fixed gaze stops that carrying by giving it one object only. When even that is dropped, the support goes, the movement has nothing to feed it, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is what the text calls reaching Shiva. A sitter tends to notice smaller things first. The eyes want to move, and after a minute they ache or water. Blinking is allowed to happen. The object may seem to flatten, blur or shimmer, and the mind often starts naming it or drifting to other things. The usual error is to stare harder, which makes the face and forehead tight and turns the sit into a strain. Another is to treat the object as the goal and keep studying it. Small signs it is working: the looking gets quiet, the object matters less, and for a moment there is attention with nothing it is attending to. Then a thought arrives and the thing is back. That is the ordinary course.
