Meaning · English
Sitting on a seat that moves, or slowly moving the body itself, the mind's state grows quiet. Then, goddess, one reaches the divine flood.
Two key words carry this. Asana is a seat, the place the body rests. Here it is a moving one: the seat itself sways, or the body is moved slowly, and the verse treats both as the same opening. Bhava is a state of being, whatever the mind is currently like. When that state turns quiet, the verse says one reaches the divine flood. The flood is a stream that was running all along, and it is never made. Take the clauses in order. First, a seat that is not fixed. Second, or the body's own slow movement. Third, the mind's state goes still. Fourth, the flood is reached. Nothing is said about holding a pose, controlling the breath or fixing a thought. The movement is the only thing offered. The logic is the text's usual one: the ordinary moment, opened from inside. A body that rocks gently gives the mind one steady, slow, repeating thing to follow, and the mind's chatter has nothing to push against. The mind does not have to be forced quiet. It quiets because its restlessness is met by something even and unhurried.
1. Sit on something that gives a little, such as a stool, a bench or a soft cushion, or sit on the floor and let the body move on its own weight. 2. Move the body slowly, in a small sway or a slight circle, with no pattern to remember. 3. Keep your attention on the movement itself, the way the weight passes from one side to the other. 4. When the mind wanders, notice it and come back to the sway. Do not scold it. 5. Let the movement grow smaller as the mind settles, and stay with whatever is left. 6. Stop when the time is up, and sit still for a moment before you stand.
The tradition's account is that the mind's movement is what hides the flood. When the body moves slowly and evenly, the mind's movement drops away, the usual supports of thought loosen, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the text's teaching, given as its own. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The back, neck and hips stop bracing, since a moving seat cannot be gripped. Small muscles along the spine take turns, and the jaw and shoulders often let go before the mind does. At first the attention jumps ahead to the next sway or watches whether it is doing it right. After a while the movement becomes a background rhythm, and thoughts come less often and thinner. A small sign it is working is a pause between thoughts that was not there before. The usual ways it goes wrong are swaying too fast, swaying to produce a feeling, or turning the movement into a count. Falling drowsy is also common, and it is not the same as quiet.
