World as Painted Show

Vijnana Bhairava 102

Meaning · English

The whole world is a conjurer's show, or a picture laid out on a surface, or a thing that whirls. For one who holds this in mind and looks at everything, happiness rises.

Three images are offered for the same world, and any one will do. Indrajala is a magician's net: a trick that looks solid while it lasts. Citrakarma is painted work, citra a picture and karma the making. A painting shows forests, crowds and storms spread over one flat surface, and none of it is anything but that surface. Bhramat comes from a root meaning to wander or spin: everything turning like a wheel and never held still. Then the two actions. Dhyayata is one who holds the thought in mind. Pashyata is one who simply looks. Either is enough, and the text joins them with no ranking. The result is sukha, ease or happiness, and udgama means a coming up. So it surfaces rather than being made. The doorway is the ordinary moment. Nothing is renounced and no other place is needed. The same room, street and faces are looked at as show, painting or turning, and the grip of taking them as solid and separate loosens from inside. The world is not denied. It is seen differently while it stays where it is.

1. Sit or stand where you are, eyes open, facing an ordinary scene: a room, a window, a street. 2. Pick one picture: a conjurer's show, a painting on a flat surface, or things turning. 3. Look at everything in the scene as that picture, without picking out one part. 4. When the mind drifts into a plan or a story, treat that as part of the picture too, and go back to looking. 5. If the picture goes flat or dry, change to another of the three. 6. After ten minutes, stop and look once more at the room as it is.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because it takes things as solid, separate and worth wanting or fearing. When the world is seen as a show or a painting, that taking loses its footing. The support drops away, the mind's movement settles, and awareness is left knowing itself. Happiness is what remains when the grip lets go. What a sitter tends to notice: at first the image stays a thought, a caption pasted over the room, and attention argues with it instead of looking. Looking is the work. After a while edges may seem flatter, colours more like paint, and a small pause may open before the usual reaction. The face of a stranger may land more lightly. It goes wrong in two usual ways. One is repeating the phrase as a slogan while the eyes stay busy elsewhere. The other is deciding that everything is unreal and going cold or numb, which is a mood, not a seeing. If the image goes dry, switching to another of the three often brings it back.
