Meaning · English

Tulsi: well-flavoured, of the village, easily found, many-spiked, she from whom demons flee, fair one, spirit-slayer, drum of the gods. It is pungent, bitter, pleasing to the heart and hot; it causes burning and pitta. It kindles agni and overcomes skin disease, painful urine, blood disorders, side-pain, kapha and vata. White and dark tulsi are held equal in quality.

Tulsi's names mostly say where it lives and what it means. Surasa means well-flavoured. Gramya, of the village, and sulabha, easy to find: it grows by every door. Bahumanjari names its many flower-spikes. Apetarakshasi, she from whom demons have fled, and bhutaghni, slayer of spirits, carry the belief that tulsi guards a house. Gauri names it the fair one. Devadundubhi, drum of the gods, likely ties it to worship. The text then gives its nature: pungent and bitter in taste, hot in effect, and pleasing to the heart. Agni, the digestive fire, is kindled by it. Kapha, the heavy, cool, moist principle, and vata, the dry, cold, moving one, are both subdued by tulsi, the text says; one way to read this is that its warmth eases them. The same heat feeds pitta, the fiery principle, which is why Bhavamishra adds that it causes burning and raises pitta. The list of complaints it overcomes is the text's teaching, not a prescription. The pale and the dark plant are declared equal. In daily life, one might use a few leaves in tea or on an offering, with its heat in mind.

A small coal stove in a winter room: it takes the damp and chill out of the air and gets the kettle singing, but sit too close and it scorches your shins. That is tulsi as the text paints it. Its heat warms what is cold and slow, kapha and vata, and wakes the digestive fire, while the same heat, in excess, stokes pitta and brings burning.

Tulsi is holy basil, a close cousin of the basil used in Italian cooking. Its sharp, clove-like taste comes from aromatic oils, eugenol among them, and that bite fits the text's 'pungent and hot' well. Warm, fragrant herbs can stir appetite, which is a fair reading of kindling agni, roughly our digestion and appetite. Vata, pitta and kapha have no modern match. As a few leaves in tea or on prasad, it is a familiar food that is generally safe. Researchers have looked at its effects on stress, blood sugar and inflammation, mostly in the lab and in small human trials; the findings are early and not firm. Concentrated extracts are a different matter from leaves: they may interact with blood-thinning or diabetes medicines and are best avoided in pregnancy without a doctor's advice.
