Meaning · English

Padma, nalina, aravinda, mahotpala, sahasrapatra, kamala, shatapatra, kusheshaya, pankeruha, tamarasa, sarasa, sarasiruha, bisaprasuna, rajiva, pushkara and ambhoruha: these are the lotus. The lotus is cooling, good for the complexion and sweet. It overcomes kapha and pitta, and it destroys thirst, burning, disorders of the blood, blisters, poison and spreading inflammation of the skin.

Bhavamishra gives the lotus sixteen names, and many of them describe it. Some say where it lives. Pankeruha means mud-born. Kusheshaya means lying in water. Sarasiruha and ambhoruha mean rising from the lake and from water. Sarasa means of the lake. Two count its petals: sahasrapatra, thousand-petalled, and shatapatra, hundred-petalled. Bisaprasuna is the flower of the bisa, the lotus stalk. Mahotpala is the great water-lily. Padma, nalina, aravinda, kamala, tamarasa, rajiva and pushkara are old names that poets and temples still use. Then come the qualities. The lotus is shita, cooling. It is varnya, good for the colour of the skin. It is madhura, sweet. It settles pitta, the fiery principle of heat, and kapha, the heavy and moist principle. The text gives no reason for this. In this system's terms, cool and sweet calm heat, which explains its action on pitta. That is why thirst, burning, troubles of the blood, blisters, poison and spreading skin inflammation all appear on its list. The text simply states its action on kapha. In the home, the lotus is food and an offering. The list is the text's teaching for physicians.

Picture a damp cotton cloth laid across a hot forehead on a May afternoon. The heat drains into the cloth, the skin calms, and the person breathes more easily. The text sees the lotus working the same way. Its cool, sweet nature draws off the excess heat it calls pitta, and the troubles on its list are mostly troubles of heat.

Today the lotus is known first as food. The crisp stem-root, kamal kakdi or nadru, is cooked across India and East Asia. It gives fibre, starch, potassium and some vitamin C. Lotus seeds are roasted or added to sweets. The plant grows in mud and still water, so it needs careful washing and proper cooking. Researchers have looked at lotus extracts, mostly in laboratory and animal work, for plant compounds such as flavonoids. Firm evidence in people is limited. Taking a concentrated extract as a medicine is a different matter from eating the vegetable. 'Cooling' describes how a food feels in this system, and kapha and pitta have no exact modern match. Burns, bleeding, poisoning and spreading skin infections need a doctor promptly, never a flower.
