Meaning · English
Nimba, picumarda, picumanda, tiktaka, arishta, paribhadra, and hinguniryasa too: these are neem's names. Neem is cool, light and binding, pungent after digestion; it quells agni and vata. It is unpleasant to the heart. It removes fatigue, thirst, cough, fever, distaste for food and worms; it removes wounds, pitta, kapha, vomiting, skin disease, nausea and urinary disorders.
The verse opens with seven names, and several are small portraits. Nimba is the everyday name. Picumarda and picumanda are sometimes read as 'crusher of picu', an old word for itching skin. Tiktaka is simply 'the bitter one'. Arishta means 'unharmed'. Paribhadra means 'good all round'. Hinguniryasa says its gum smells like hing, asafoetida. Then comes its nature. It is cool and light. It is grahi, binding: it dries and holds what runs loose. It is katu-paka, sharp in its after-effect once digested. It quells agni, the digestive fire, and vata, the airy, moving dosha. It is ahridya, not pleasing to the heart, commonly glossed as unpalatable. Bhavamishra then lists what it removes: fatigue, thirst, cough, fever, loss of taste, worms, wounds, vomiting, skin disease, nausea and meha, the urinary disorders. It also removes pitta, the hot dosha, and kapha, the heavy one. The verse gives no reason. In this system's terms, the bitter taste and a cool nature reduce kapha and pitta. In the home, neem is met as a seasonal bitter food and a leaf of worship.
Think of the block of alum a barber rubs on a small nick after a shave. It stings a little and feels cool. The skin draws tight and the bleeding stops. Nobody enjoys it, but everyone trusts it. That is the picture behind cool, binding and ahridya: neem draws in what runs loose, cools what is heated, and is welcomed for its effect, not for its taste.
Neem is still eaten across India in small, seasonal ways. Its flowers go into the Ugadi pachadi. Bengali kitchens fry its tender leaves with brinjal. It is also eaten with jaggery at Gudi Padwa. A little bitterness at the start of a meal can sharpen appetite, though this verse itself describes neem as quelling agni. Laboratory work has looked at neem extracts against microbes and inflammation. Studies in people are few and small, so the evidence remains weak. The doshas have no modern match. Eating a few leaves as food is a different thing from taking neem as a medicine. Concentrated neem oil has caused serious harm when given to young children, and it is not advised in pregnancy. Neem as a remedy belongs with a doctor, not the home shelf.
